INTO THE BLACK |
Blame Jane Hunt, not me. She nominated me for a Jolly Lobster Award--a reward (questionable) for those providing fun and community by blogging. The rules, thankfully, are simple:
Interesting 'love' fact about lobsters: To mate, the female chooses the male in his den, usually after checking out many male dens (The hussy). The male usually accepts and let the female in (Every knock on the door is an opportunity). She molts (sheds off her hard shell, becoming powerless) and stays in the male’s den and under his protection for about a week. Within a week, mating is over and her new shell has grown. (Wow, I could write a book around the mating ritual of the lobster--excited. And now for the questions:
Have you ever written a book involving sea scenes? If not why not and do you intend to? That would be a yes. In Hard to Hold, a floating, private asylum is featured. In Hard to Forget, Jack stares moodily out to sea, and in Hard to Chase, (WIP), I'm not yet sure about a sea scene, but it does rain a lot. 2 What is your current WIP? Hard to Chase: a sexy thriller in which the Administration covertly play footloose with the lives of frontline troops, and featuring a frigid (hardly!) psychotherapist, and a too-randy-for-his-own-good (yes, Will is all of that) Intelligence officer. Do you have a favorite sea film? And why? Titanic. For one scene alone. The hot, car-below-decks scene. Where Jack and whatever her name is, get it on. That palm slapped flat against a steamed up window pane? Iconic! A favourite fish recipe to share? No gross! Haven’t touched fish since I found out microscopic worms live on their scales. Gross! Gross! And, what kind of creature watches you while you eat it? Jesus, those eyes. Unnatural. Then there are the bones--nasty choking ambush. Bottom line, would you put a grenade in your mouth? No, so why would you go near fish? Your favourite sea-going book? Read a good few bodice-rippers about pirates, the Hornblower series (not a bodice-ripper) was compelling, Custler can do oceans, but my stand out book is Robert Lewis Stevenson's Kidnapped--a book that has it all going on, whether on land or at sea. (Must have read it a million times when I was a kid) Can you share a favourite sea-side memory? Tobago. Capsizing a sailing dinghy in the surf (suffering a concussion, plus damn near breaking a finger in the process). And, some clever dick shouting ‘I thought all Brits could sail’ as I staggered back along the beach. Needless to say, I damn near kneed him one. There is nothing dignified about being 6 months pregnant in a bikini, and looking like a coughed-up fur ball. Yeah, that was me--fat and furious! Most memorable sea-going journey? Jumping overboard at Henley Royal Regatta, 'cos my * date * was easily the most boring man I had ever met, and I couldn’t tolerate his company a moment longer. My only regret: trashing an extraordinaryly expensive frock, and ruining a vintage pair of lace stiletto heels. (The River Thames flows into the sea, so this does qualify as a sea-going journey—albeit, a short one.) And in turn, I nominate: Alison Lodge ('cos she does the most gorgeous Pinterest boards) Lindsay J Prior ('cos she does the most delectable vamps & lycans) Aurelia B. Rowl ('cos she always busy) Toni Kenyon ('cos she's interesting) Jane Linfoot ('cos she's always out and about) Ellis Vidler ('cos she's spontaneous) Michelle Smart ('cos she's well...smart) Yikes, some time ago She Who Must Be Obeyed, aka Lady Fury, nominated me for a Liebster Blog Award. Naturally, I braced, then figured, what the hell. The rules are easy: * Display the Liebster logo and link back to the person nominating you. * Answer the 10 questions posed. * Pose 10 new questions of your own. * Nominate some recipients of to likewise receive a Liebster Award. Lady Fury's 10 Questions:
Which fictional character would you most fancy having a fling with and why? Call me a tart, but there are so, so many: Acheron (from Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series, oh, and Nick Gautier from the same, are right up there. Then there’s Wrath from J R Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood, oh, and Shehanne Moore’s Black Wolf from His Judas Bride, and Bernard Cornwall's Sharp, and all the Ghost Walker men (Christine Feehan) and, and, and—ok, I’m not just a tart, I’m an easy tart. And the why? Well, aside from being hot, they are rough diamonds, hard as all hell and all utter bastards who make me laugh. You’ve been shipwrecked on a desert island, what book can’t you be without? The entire works of Sherrilyn Kenyon bound up if one thick, fat, tome. That should keep me out of trouble. What inspires you? Places or people? Places. People scare me. Soooo unpredictable. What little tome are you working on right now? Hard to Chase: a honey-pot romp with a sinister edge involving biological weaponry. Who would you like to see in the movie version? Someone with Ian Somerhalder's eyes, Will Smith’s body, Josh Holloway’s snarl, Gregory Peck’s stature/intensity…guess that’s Frankenstein’s monster then. In your own books do you have a favourite character and why? Nah, no favourites. I’m flighty by nature. What do you think is the best book movie? To Kill a Mocking Bird (damn that film is good) Roughly how long does it take you to write a book? When I’m in the zone, about 5 weeks, but then it’s all about the editing. If I’m not in the zone, I can spend months staring into space. Favourite food? Raspberry Crème Brûlée Any bits in your book you are embarrassed to show your family? I’m not the one who’s embarrassed, they are! Which makes for some hilarious, spontaneous out-loud readings by me. And my 10 questions are: 1. Jeans or skirt? Why? 2. If you were a vegetable, what would you be? Why? 3. Banana or apple? Why? 4. By the sea or up a mountain? Why? 5. You’re writing a highly erotic novel—what would your pen name be? 6. What is your favourite romance genre? To read? To write? 7. How difficult do you find it to name your characters? Share some examples. 8. Which writing rule would you most like to break? Why? 9. Duvet or traditional sheets + blanket? Why? 10. Insert the opening paragraph of your current WIP. And I nominate: Aimee Duffy Lindsay J Prior Fiona Chapman Rae Rivers Avery Flynn Ashlee Mallory Well, for those of you familiar with Shehanne Moore—author of taut, emotion-laden historical romances with more edge than Jack the Ripper’s blade—you’ll know she likes nothing better than raising the bar. The woman’s fearless. She also enjoys a good challenge…setting them that is. I want a guest post on ‘security’ she elbowed (demanded). To help birth ‘Loving Lady Lazuli’ into the world. And, after a jostled retreat from my own heroes, Nick, Jack and Will, Nick Marshall stepped up, hiding his concern of travelling back across the centuries. Yes, he feared for how his diction might change, but in truth, he feared for his baubles more. This was one recital for which he did not want to provide security. Anyway, I’m replicating the post below (almost in its entirety)…you’ll be pleased to know Nick’s baubles survived the time travel intact—just ask Anna, in Hard to Hold when it hits the e-shelves in April 2014, because she should know. To Catch A ThiefThere is a gulp, maybe a charm, of magpies aflight in the area. Clever, devious thieves hell bent on gathering baubles and sparkles. And then there’s the recital. An evening of entertainment. A social gathering of the gem bedecked. A prize opportunity for those who would purloin. An imperative that they be denied. Dev (hero in Loving Lady Lazuli) won’t be played for a fool. Not again. No jewels will be disappearing this night. History is for the making, not the repeating. Hence, Dev’s turned to his friend Marshall for assistance, a spy, a master of security, a man as relentless (and reckless) in the pursuit of pleasurable escape as he. Come, let us eavesdrop on their preparations. Dev: “I’m not arming my footmen with pistols. Chances are they’d shoot me up the arse. It’s security I’m requesting, not a damned firing squad.” Marshall: “So you don’t trust your own staff?” Dev: “I don’t trust anyone.” Marshall: “Wise, given your unfortunate experience, but…” Dev: “No pistols! I can’t abide swooning females, and they’ll fall like swans shot at the sight of a weapon. It’s the godforsaken fashion.” Marshall: “Then I’ll use my own men. They know how to be discreet. And whilst on the subject of discretion, kindly have the place aired before tonight. Opium’s not a scent to impress, not if the ladies are as delicate as you suggest. I had thought you’d forsaken that particular pleasure.” Dev’s response, a half-muted muttering, is too filthy to share, but suffice to say Marshall, a champion of gutter language and anatomical description, barked a laugh of respect and admiration.) Marshall: (sobering) “My men. My rules. They’ll be patrolling the grounds and the corridors. You stick with the brandy if you’ve a need for numbness, but I want you alert. And present. No disappearing with a lady (or two). Not tonight. In fact, I’ll be sealing all doors so the only caress you can expect is if our suspicions become aroused—then I’ll allow you a search of the culprit. Count your luck should the thieving bastard prove to be female.”
Woohoo, I just got one of these--though I admit I'm a little tardy in my acceptance, which is strange because I'm not usually late when joining a party. John Quinn, Perspiring Poet, thank you for the nomination. The rules: post the logo, link back to he/she who nominated, provide an A-Z guide to your soul (I think) and then nominate forward. Should be easy enough... A is for Abso-bloody-lutely! (Reckless, that's me)
B is for Bollocks (no better way to refute a statement or counter a view) C is for Cock Shy (which my characters are not) D is for Drama (but never as in queen) E is for Excel (but not as in spreadsheet) F is for Fuckery (as in 'what the', a favourite phrase of mine) G is for Grins (hate giggles, why not just laugh) H is for Harangue (cos it rhymes with meringue--the correct spelling of which I had to look up) I is for Impossible (well, I'm told I am, to which I say Bollocks as in B) J is for Jest (when I go, let it be with a smile on my face) K is for Kryptonite (as in soul mate) L is for Limp (not as in leg, as in characters, which I do not like) M is for Mischief (yeah, I likey, likey) N is for Knobhead (not my fault it starts with a K, and I've met a few number of these) O is for OMG (which I recently chanted when I touched a live wire--yes, it was by way of a greeting) P is for Procreate (I have 5 children--that's five times through labour, you little buggers) Q is for Kwah, Kwah, Kwah (bastard phonics) R is for Rampant (as in run amok) and Red, my favourite colour. S is for Sig. (as in gun, which my fictional heroes carry) and Sex (which they enjoy) T is for Tempt, Trouble, Turnips and Trauma U is for Ummmmm (as in when my mind blanks) V is for Valour and Valiant (wonderful, old fashioned words that cause me to 'swoon') W is for Women (of course! No, I'm not a bra-burner, just proud) X is for Kisses (xxxxxxxxx, ok, so that is kind of trite) Z is for ZZZzzzzz (sleep, which I need) Well, there you have it, my A-Z for today (Psychiatrists/Psychotherapists, your analysis is not welcome). And, I pass the baton on to: Aurelia B Rowl www.aureliabrowl.com Sofia Harper http://sofiaharper.com Lindsay J Prior www.lindsayjpryor.com Jane Hunt Jane Hunt Writer Website Lukas Draco the hero of Jane Hunt's The Dragon Legacy is my blog guest today. For which I am super grateful, and for which I thank Jane here and now. She's got an amazing imagination, we're lucky she chose to share it with us. Now I'm being rude, I need to introduce the main man... Welcome to 'Into the Black' Lukas. It's lovely to meet you Incy. Would you be prepared to pose for a picture for the Hussy Pinterest board? No? Then I better get on with the interview. Hot in here isn't it? Easy questions first: Are you adventurous? Lukas laughs. My life's been one long adventure and I've been around a long time, so yes, if you class demon slaying as adventurous, I am. What is the craziest thing you've ever done? Letting Fleur talk me into this interview, no seriously? Probably allowing a human to see my true self... Describe your ideal woman. That's easy Fleur. If you want to know what she's like read how we met in 'The Dragon Legacy' Do believe in love at first sight? If you asked me that question a year ago I would have said I didn't believe in love. Now I know it exists. I don't think its love you feel at first sight though... lust...fear...were my first emotions. Why fear? The vulnerability, the knowledge your life will never be the same frightened me. Do you believe in 'Happy Ever After'? Not until I met Fleur but now I hope 'Happy Ever After' exists. Career or family which is your top priority? I'm a demon slayer it's more than a career in human terms. It's what defines me, a way of life. My family is widely scattered so killing demons has been my main focus. Now I don't know maybe I could have more... Who's your favourite fairytale heroine? Belle from Beauty and the Beast, I'll let you draw your own conclusions Where in the world would you most like to live? I'm never in one place for long but if I could stay in one location, the hills of the English Lake District where my kin have always lived. What's your favourite sport? Demon hunting of course. That wasn't too painful was it? Now about that picture if you could just take your shirt off and stand...'click, click'-- gorgeous! (Sorry, but I'm not sharing this image, it's going in my private stash!) And thank you, Jane Intrigued? Want to know more about Lukas? Here you go... Blurb 'When emotionally fragile Fleur Curwen decides she wants excitement in her boring life she signs up for a Murder Mystery Weekend in the wilds of the English Lake District. She enters a paranormal world where danger and death are common occurrences. Demon slayer Lukas Draco is a loner. He lives by two simple rules: No emotional entanglements and duty must remain his first priority. His beliefs are challenged when he's inexplicably drawn to Fleur, a human woman with an unusual psychic aura. Sparks of sexual attraction ignite threatening both his search for the dragon's egg he buried a thousand years ago and Fleur's life. Under the cover of a murder mystery weekend an apocalyptic hunt begins.’ Excerpt: Fleur stole a sideways glance at Lukas as he conversed with Jasmine. His impressive physique exuded an aura of power personified by a fit, muscular body and long, lean limbs. Filled with suppressed sexual excitement, she half closed her eyelids, leaned back against the headrest, and continued her secret study of him. His face was the epitome of masculine beauty, characterized by well-defined angular cheekbones, covered with pale, almost translucent skin. Its apparent delicacy did not detract from his masculinity; he looked like a fallen angel. A tell-tale blush stained her cheeks rosy. A rush of heat pooled between her legs. Fleur shuddered. Shocked at her impulsiveness, she sat on her hands and admired the sleekness of his fashionable long, straight hair, which looked like silk. Neediness overpowered her cautious nature as her gaze feasted on its remarkable black color, reminiscent of an exotic bird or reptile with highlights of metallic turquoise and blue woven through it. Fleur stole another glance at Lukas from under her lashes. He stared back. Horrified, she blushed unable to avoid his inquisitive gaze. She waited for the smug look or the double entendre. Lukas’ smile hid a myriad of emotions. The fire in his heated look betrayed him, luminescent and golden, in stark contrast with the dying afternoon light. Lukas slanted a glance at Fleur. The look of rapt absorption on her face stilled his breath. She looked at him hungrily, as if he was a delicacy she would love to taste. His blood echoed in his head as it thundered through his arteries. Arousal exploded in every inch of his body, highlighted by the uncomfortable tightness of his designer jeans, a testimony to his body's readiness to act. He stopped talking in mid-sentence. Jasmine looked at him through the rear view mirror. His body leaned into Fleur's, attuned to her hot gaze's invitation. No. He couldn't, not here or anywhere, with her. Lukas sensed the exact moment Fleur noticed him. He disguised all signs of his arousal. He hoped his expression revealed none of his inner turmoil. The truck turned into a concealed driveway. Calmer, he resumed his light conversation with Jasmine, who didn't remark on his recent distraction. Fleur stared through the window. Moments later, the truck stopped with a shudder. Lukas smiled at her hasty retreat. He sighed as the truck door shut behind her. His lack of control bothered him. His mission needed all his attention. A dalliance with a pretty human was not on his agenda. It would jeopardize the dragon egg's safety. ͌ “Welcome to Hallow House.” Jasmine walked around the truck for their luggage. The grey, windswept house stood hidden among the hills. Paint peeled from the window frames and moss grew along the grey stone walls. A wave of coldness swept through Fleur. She shuddered. “It’s so atmospheric, perfect for a murder mystery.” She looked across at Lukas. He seemed preoccupied. A woman appeared at the house's front door. Lukas' face lost its shuttered look. He smiled. “It’s lovely to meet you both. I’m Grace.” “It’s lovely to meet you too,” Fleur smiled at the older woman, reassured by her kind smile. ͌“I’m delighted to meet you.” Lukas shook Grace’s hand. Her gaze widened as their physic auras merged. Lukas controlled his response; his face remained devoid of expression. Jasmine frowned and touched her mother's shoulder. With one last puzzled look at Lukas, she said, “I’ll show you to your rooms. Afternoon tea is at three. The conservatory is at the back. You'll have an opportunity to meet the other guests there.” Lukas smiled. He sensed her interest and strength. They'd met once, years before. She owed him, and he needed her help now. ͌Fleur unpacked her bags in her shabby-chic room. Her mind strayed to Lukas' surprising effect on her. Vivid recollections of his strong embrace and the hardness of his muscular body bombarded her. She splashed cold water on her face in an attempt to cool the burn from her inner heat. Why did she crave this man's touch? Intimate images danced through her confused mind. She sprayed perfume on her heated skin. Nothing in her life prepared her for this tangle of conflicted emotions. Perhaps she'd hidden away too long? She needed excitement. Her ex-lover didn't understand her grief after the premature deaths of her much-loved parents. Instead, he chipped away at her self-esteem. Lukas saw through her layers of self-protection. He noticed her. The heat in his stare scorched her deep inside. She needed this man. She blushed at her wickedness. The alarm on her mobile sounded, almost three; time to go. She took a deep breath, determined to dampen her aroused state. With a final check of her appearance, she retrieved her bag and headed downstairs. Fleur stood inside the conservatory until her eyes adjusted for the brightness. She walked further into the room and scanned the occupants for Lukas, but he wasn't there. Disappointed, Fleur looked around the room. Jasmine's companions drew her gaze. Something set the unusual men apart from the other people there. She saw a familiar face. Grace was deep in conversation with two of the older guests. She looked busy, so Fleur didn't disturb her. The designer-clad men recaptured her interest. The dark-haired man appeared fascinated with Jasmine. His face darkened as Jasmine interrupted his diatribe. "You'll have to excuse me. I need to welcome Fleur." Jasmine headed in her direction. Without Jasmine’s vivacity, the conversation between the two high-powered men lapsed into silence. The younger man looked bored and distracted. The delicate rose- patterned china tea cup appeared awkward in his large strong-boned hands. He ran his long fingers through his shaggy, platinum blond, almost silver, hair. It masked the paleness of his silver-colored eyes. He looked handsome. Fleur waited to see if her heart flipped. It didn't. Her stomach lurched at the implications of her discovery. Her attraction to Lukas was based on something deeper than eye candy. Now it creates characters and scenarios which provide the inspiration for my stories. I am so excited to finally have a career as a writer. My love affair with the written word started as a teenager. I secretly dreamed of writing the romantic novels I loved to read. Life had other plans for me. Marriage at twenty-one whilst still at university launched me into a career in health service management. I often thought about writing in my spare time but my career and two wonderful children kept me occupied 24/7. Illness forced an abrupt end to my career. Always the optimist I seized the opportunity to write full time in 2012. The Dragon Legacy is my first published novel and I am excited to be sharing it with a wider audience. When I'm not writing I enjoy reading, book reviewing, social media and walking in the countryside. I'm passionate about animal welfare. But, more than that, her tenacity shamed me and her infectious fearlessness lured me over to the dark side, that place where the words ‘no’ and ‘can’t’ do not feature. Here was a woman, I decided, I wanted/needed to know. She was just so damned naughty, in a way that positively charmed. So, I familiarized myself with some of her work, and wow…just wow. Sofia Harper (known to some as Melissa Blue) writes heroes you want to reach for and stroke, sometimes with your fingers, more often with your tongue (just check out the abs below). So today I'm excited to host the delicious Sofia Harper. To have her grace my blog is a privilege. And, she’s going to provide you with a sneaky peek at her forthcoming title (out 9th September), Hot Knight in Paradise—you have been warned. Over to you Sofia, tell us something about your hero... If I had to describe my hero from HOT KNIGHT IN PARADISE, Marshall, I'd say he's sweetly dirty. He's the kind of man who'd make sure you're OK. His former job as an attorney has given him the ability to read folks pretty well. So, if you're full of crap and are lying about being OK, he's going to push, nicely-ish. All right. The best evidence is actual proof, so hows this for a teaser: “I'm not going to stand out here all night while you try to suss out the possibilities.” He put out his hand. “Give me back the water.” Surprised at his sudden abrupt tone, she shoved it at him. “Fine.” He took it and put something else in her hand. She clicked on the flashlight to see what the small object was, and her heart shot up into her throat. A switchblade. On instinct, she flicked it open and aimed it at him. But Marshall had already turned around and started walking away. By the time the fear burned out, she realized he’d given it to her to protect herself. See. A nice-ish guy. He's also choosy about his lovers. Doesn't sleep with just about anybody. If he sleeps with you, he calls the next day if that's what he's promised. He's a complete gentleman. He was not softening. “Raise you a dollar.” She placed her cards face down on the table and slid quarters into the large pile. For a woman halfway to drunk and just shy of tipsy, he had to say, she played well. Up fifteen bucks. Taken two shots and had bet it all the last hand and won. She leaned on the last quarter and he got another view of her breasts. Blood rushed from his head and his mind went fuzzy. Nope, definitely not softening. She was a troublemaker in a five-foot-four tight little package. He needed to be rid of her, and the sooner the better, keeping with his personal policy. But, why of all things would I ever call such a sweet man dirty? Yup. That's my hero in a nutshell. How would you describe your favorite heroes?
Thanks for that Sofia, I'm sold (and salivating). Want to know more about Sofia Harper? Here's her bio: Sofia Harper started writing contemporary romance a long, long time ago. Instead, she gets Marshall Jackson, surely the sexiest man alive. Too bad he's got an emotional wall around himself--and her only hope of getting off the island ... Marshall has a strict no damsels in distress policy, but there's something about Leah that makes him want to break his own rules. He agrees to let her work in his bar until she earns enough to get home. But the more time they spend together, the harder it is to deny the scorching attraction between them. Soon hot island nights provide balm to their wounded souls, but will these two flawed exiles make peace with the past in time to claim the future they deserve together--or will paradise be lost?
